Abstract

The role of glycine betaine osmoprotection of various Arthrobacter strains which display a variation in salt tolerance was investigated. When externally provided, this compound enhanced the growth of a half of the strains studied, demonstrating its utilization as an osmo-protectant. However, glycine betaine was inefficient on the other half of the strains studied. With the exception of A. ramosus and A. sulfureus, all strains were able to use glycine betaine as a sole carbon source. Keywords: glycine betaine, Arthrobacter spp
